Description

Criminal Recidivism: Explanation, Prediction and Prevention – eBook PDF

Criminal Recidivism, (PDF) aims to fill a gap in the criminological psychology literature by examining the procedures underlying persistent criminal careers. This ebook aims to investigate criminal recidivism, and how, why and for how long an individual continues to commit crimes, whereas also reviewing knowledge about risk assessment and the role of psychopathy (including neurocriminological factors) in boosting recidivism. It also stresses on the recidivism of sex offenders and on what works in decreasing reoffending.

At an empirical level, this ebook attempts to explain criminal persistence and recidivism using longitudinal data from the Cambridge Study in Delinquent Development (CSDD). At a psycho-criminological level, it links together quantitative and qualitative analyses, making its content a practical guide to describe, predict, and intervene to reduce the risk of criminal recidivism. The authors show quantitative analyses of criminal careers, along with qualitative life histories of chronic offenders, in order to bring home the consequences and reality of a life of crime.

The ebook is aimed not only at advanced students and academics in psychology, probation studies, social sciences, criminology, psychiatry, political science, sociology, and penology, but also at decision-makers, practitioners and policy officials within the realm of crime intervention and prevention, and also at judges, forensic experts, and lawyers.

Reviews

“Five percent of offenders carry out fifty percent of crimes. Beyond that, what more do we know? This ebook is the authoritative source for the newest information on reoffending, rearrest, reconviction, specialization, versatility, reincarceration, life-course-persistent offending, escalation or de-escalation, risk assessment, desistance, psychopathic personality and most important of all, what works to lessen recidivism.” — Terrie E Moffitt, Nannerl O. Keohane University Professor, Duke University, USA

“A small group of offenders are answerable for the majority of crime, and our capacity to explain, predict, and stop recidivism is of the utmost importance for society. Georgia Zara and David Farrington, prominent scholars in the field, offer a penetrating analysis of the most important issues in recidivism research. Clearly written and deeply informative, this groundbreaking ebook provides a new and invigorating perspective on criminal recidivism. Engaging and level-headed, this fascinating and very accessible account of recidivism includes all key knowledge bases on criminal reoffending, including prediction, psychopaths, sex offenders, treatment, risk assessment instruments, and much more. It’s an invaluable and outstanding resource for all those who deal with offenders, both in research and practice.” — Adrian Raine, Richard Perry University Professor, Departments of Criminology, Psychiatry, and Psychology, University of Pennsylvania, USA
